Hey Keith, so tell me…
What's a typical day look like for you?
Go for a cycle first-thing, followed by a strong black coffee, followed by checking my email and social media accounts. My work as a Senior Software Developer at Quorum in Edinburgh, Scotland involves a wide variety of designing and developing software solutions using the Power Platform (especially Power Apps), Azure, various web development technologies, various databases, etc. Evening are a mix of chill out time, playing squash, speaking at/attending user groups, and various other shenanigans!
What is your favourite power platform app or feature and why?
Canvas Power Apps! Being able to quickly and easily build an app from scratch is awesome, and there are lots of options to extend them and combine them with other Power Platform technologies such as Power Automate and Power BI reports.
What do you love most about working in this industry?
Variety keeps me learning new things (which I love), keeps me interested (which I also love), enables me to solve problems (which I very much love), and meet interesting people (which I particularly love).
How did you get into the tech industry?
While studying Physics at university, I took an AI module which involved coding to solve problems - that ended up being the thing which I enjoyed the most! So, after graduating, I moved down south to work for a London-based consultancy who hired a rag-tag bunch of misfits with various technical degrees (picture the A-Team but a lot more geeky) and were willing to train us up in the various IT technologies we needed for client projects.
What single bit of advice would you give a newbie to the industry?
Find your passion and do what you love.
If you had an autobiography, what would you title it?
Blessed
Name one hobby or other interest you have outside of tech?
Playing the guitar. Over the years, I've been in a few bands, written music, and been a guitar teacher.
Name one thing that you would like to have achieved within the next 5 years.
Become a Power Platform Solution Architect after building on my Power Platform knowledge and certifications.
Do you have any role models within the industry? If so, could you name a few?
Apart from Laura Webb, of course...?
There are so many wonderful, supportive people in the tech community but some of my favourites are Gregor Suttie, John Lunn, Kristine Kolodziejski, Mert Yeter, Jessica White, and Pete Gallagher.
